Malaysia are guaranteed two berths at the World Championships men’s and mixed doubles quarter-finals after two Malaysian pairs were pitted for the third-round action in Paris on Thursday.
Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik will face an in-from Yap Roy King-Junaidi Arif in the men’s doubles, while in the mixed doubles, Hoo Pang Rong-Cheng Su Yin are up against Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai.
It was a great day for the Malaysian doubles contingent as all the top pairs won their duels on Wednesday to move into the third round.
This included the likes of Pearly Tan-M.Thinaah, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun and Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei.
The only pair who crashed out on Wednesday were Teoh Mei Xing-Go Pei Kee.
As expected, the second seeded Chia-Soh comfortably booked their berth after overcoming Scottish twin brothers Christopher Grimley-Matthew Grimley 21-15, 21-16.
“They were underdogs and play a fast game. They played in the first round too, so they had already adapted to the venue. Our mindset coming into this match is to be humble, and not think we are above them,” said Soh.
The pair, who clinched the Paris Olympics bronze medal in the same venue at the Adidas Arena, next face a daunting task against national team-mates Yap-Junaidi.
The world number 22 pair had stunned Thai’s top pair Dechapol Puavaranukroh-Kittinupong Kedren 21-13, 21-17 to set-up the all-Malaysian encounter.
The success of the Malaysian doubles contingent made up for the disappointment of the singles shuttlers, who saw their campaign end on Wednesday after Leong Jun Hao and K.Letshaana both lost.
